23 May 2020 - Plague Journal Day 72

We all are still sheltering in place, but I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

It appears our governor has struck another blow against sexism. She's proving that a woman can be just as capricious, opaque, and authoritarian as any man. Well done?
OK, that's enough politics for now.

It's International Jazz Day, so get out on your front porch and play a riff or two on that instrument you bought yesterday from Joe's Music. No need to be shy or embarrassed about your abilities. Remember, improvisation can even be just getting back to what you meant to do after you make a mistake.

For no doubt completely unrelated reasons it's also Crohn's and Colitis Day. I'm pretty sure this isn't the official song of this day, but I'm equally sure it should be. At the very least it makes me smile. The other option for today's song would be this one. Either way, enjoy!

Now, please let me shift gears for a moment.
Our church has been hosting a virtual 12-hour prayer chain the last several Saturdays. I've taken one of the 15-minute time slots each week, and have been amazed at how quickly that time passes, as well as how intense and moving this time of prayer has been.
As the weeks have gone by, I've found different ways to focus my prayers, from the list of church members needing prayer, to the hymns associated with the stained glass windows of our sanctuary, to the various creeds of the church found in the hymnal, to praying the Psalms.
That's where I was today, and I found myself on Psalm 50, and decided to stay there. It's a powerful, convicting, and comforting message, so allow me to share it here, and pray that it will bless you as it did me today.

 Psalm 50 English Standard Version (ESV)
A Psalm of Asaph.

The Mighty One, God the Lord,
    speaks and summons the earth
    from the rising of the sun to its setting.
Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty,
    God shines forth.

Our God comes; he does not keep silence;
    before him is a devouring fire,
    around him a mighty tempest.
He calls to the heavens above
    and to the earth, that he may judge his people:
“Gather to me my faithful ones,
    who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!”
The heavens declare his righteousness,
    for God himself is judge! Selah

“Hear, O my people, and I will speak;
    O Israel, I will testify against you.
    I am God, your God.
Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you;
    your burnt offerings are continually before me.
I will not accept a bull from your house
    or goats from your folds.
For every beast of the forest is mine,
    the cattle on a thousand hills.
I know all the birds of the hills,
    and all that moves in the field is mine.

“If I were hungry, I would not tell you,
    for the world and its fullness are mine.
Do I eat the flesh of bulls
    or drink the blood of goats?
Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving,
    and perform your vows to the Most High,
and call upon me in the day of trouble;
    I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”

But to the wicked God says:
    “What right have you to recite my statutes
    or take my covenant on your lips?
For you hate discipline,
    and you cast my words behind you.
If you see a thief, you are pleased with him,
    and you keep company with adulterers.

“You give your mouth free rein for evil,
    and your tongue frames deceit.
You sit and speak against your brother;
    you slander your own mother's son.
These things you have done, and I have been silent;
    you thought that I was one like yourself.
But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you.

“Mark this, then, you who forget God,
    lest I tear you apart, and there be none to deliver!
The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me;
    to one who orders his way rightly
    I will show the salvation of God!”

22 May 2020 - Plague Journal Day 71

We all are still sheltering in place, but I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

Well, well, well - today is National Buy a Musical Instrument Day!
If you're not going to buy a guitar or piano, then how about a ukulele or a Kalimba (= thumb piano), or even a kazoo! There's probably no better place than Joe's Music in Eastpointe to celebrate this occasion, so head on over to their Facebook page and see what you can see and buy. (Full disclosure - I'm just a satisfied and long-time customer, I get nothing from this but the satisfaction of letting others in on the great place that is Joe's. Tell them I sent you.)

I don't know if they have 76 trombones in stock, but that would be a fun thing to see, wouldn't it?
Now go buy an instrument and make some music!

Keep Calm and Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.

21 May 2020 - Plague Journal Day 70

We all are still sheltering in place, but I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

Today is National Strawberries and Cream Day. This puts me in mind of a trip to England way back in the 20th century. It was June - Wimbeldon time in London - and it was hot. No, not just hot for England, with her generally mild climate, it was well into the 80s (that's Fahrenheit - we were getting close to 30C for those who speak metric). It was hot enough that Harrods had relaxed their dress code to allow shoppers in shorts to enter the store. (Yes, Harrods, the department store, had a dress code and refused entry to shoppers not conforming to said standards.)
Well, although they were allowing shorts, they were not allowing cutoffs, and especially not very short cutoffs. How do I know that? One of our party was wearing precisely that, and was turned away at the door. What to do? This still seems almost beyond odd to me, but we went shopping at another store to buy shorts in order to go shopping at Harrods.
You're likely wondering why any of that came to mind because of strawberries and cream day. Allow me to explain. Strawberries and cream is a traditional celebratory treat at Wimbeldon time, and the shop where we ended up buying shorts was a sports clothing type store. Accordingly, they had small bowls of berries and cream as a treat for their shoppers, and we were glad to accept their offer.
Ah, the joys of Wimbeldon and shopping at Harrods when it's hot in London.
Here's a bonus way to celebrate berries and cream!

Today is also the celebration of The Ascension.
Check it out here: Luke 24:45-53, Acts 1:6-11

Why does it matter? Christ has gone to prepare a place for us, and to be an advocate for us. Knowing He is there, interceding for His own makes life Bearable, Meaningful, Exciting, and Joyful. Amen.

20 May 2020 - Plague Journal Day 69

We all are still sheltering in place, but I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

You should have noticed that today is Plague Journal Day 69. Clearly that means you should watch Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure to celebrate. If you don't know why, then you really should watch it, and listen to Rufus; he knows what he's talking about.

Of course, you could watch My Fair Lady instead if you wish (or watch both of them). Why? Well today is also Eliza Doolittle Day. Which reminds me that I had read somewhere that the Spanish King was quarantined on his private jet during the COVID-19 shut-down of his nation. That meant that the reign in Spain was mainly on his plane.
You're welcome.

At any rate, whatever you end up watching today, why not enjoy a freshly-baked quiche? It's National Quiche Lorraine Day, after all. One of the first things I ever cooked for Heidi was a quiche. Not a Lorraine-style one, but rather a seafood quiche with crab and scallops in it. As I recall, it was quite delicious, and we actually had dinner and a movie as we ate and watched Excalibur. It seems like yesterday in a way, and yet I know it was more than a few weeks ago.

Keep Calm and Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.

19 May 2020 - Plague Journal Day 68

We all are still sheltering in place, but I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

I hope you’ve found that even in this time away from one another, there is still a sense of community in the church. I know I have. Frankly, it’s amazing what God can do. At our house, we’ve “attended” a lot more worship services these last weeks than we could in real life, as it were, and it’s been very fulfilling. We’ve worshiped all over Southeast Michigan - in Grosse Pointe, Mount Clemens, South Lyon, Waterford, and Warren - and even College Grove, Tennessee!
It’s not the same, watching things on the screen, sitting on the couch, drinking coffee during service, but it is the same in the sense that we’re worshiping the same God with our brothers and sisters.

We all know that getting ready and then the commute to church can be a chore and a contentious time, and living room church can take most of that right out of the mix. Well, I’ve heard from a mom about how her kids have “gone to church” with her every week of this lock-down, and with no complaints, no fighting, they actually look forward to it. I pray that they will be able to find that it’s even better when we really do get together, and that it’s worth getting up a little earlier to go to the church and worship with their church family. I pray that we all will.

“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” - Hebrews 10:23-25 ESV

I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord!” - Psalm 122:1 ESV

18 May 2020 - Plague Journal Day 67

We all are still sheltering in place, but I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

As we continue to navigate these strange times, now and then a day comes along that just seems to "rub it in" as it were. Today is one of those days. It's National Visit Your Relatives Day. That seems so 2019, doesn't it?

Well, since (in general) we can't visit our relatives, we need some kind of alternative. Why not jump on the Quarantine Cooking bandwagon and make a cheese soufflé and deliver it to your relatives' porch instead? Why that suggestion? Well only because today is also National Cheese Soufflé Day!

Remember, soufflés aren't nearly as finicky as a 20th century sitcom would have you believe, so go for it! Post a photo on your favorite social medium and tag it with #PlagueSouffle - we'll be watching!

17 May 2020 - Plague Journal Day 66

We all are still sheltering in place, but I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.

Hey, folks, today is Stepmothers Day! How does one celebrate that occasion? Perhaps watch a Disney film together? Read a fairy tale? OK, maybe not.

If you're out in the woods hunting mushrooms (today is National Mushroom Hunting Day), you might want to watch out for huntsmen sent by an evil stepmother. That makes me wonder if perhaps Walt Disney had too many 'shrooms and that's why he was so hard on stepmothers. It could be. It's just a hypothesis, mind you, but still ....

Today I'm going back to one of the prayers in the back of the Methodist Hymnal (the 1964/66 one). I just read it again and it seems more than appropriate to our times.

#742 - FOR ALL CONDITIONS OF MEN
O God, the creator and preserver of all mankind: we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of men; that thou wouldst be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations. More especially, we pray for thy holy Church universal, that it may be so guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to thy fatherly goodness all those who are in any way afflicted or distressed in mind, body, or estate; that it may please thee to comfort and relieve them according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their suffering, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we ask for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.
