18 July 2020 - Plague Journal Day 128

Micah 6:8
Psalm 119:105
Yes, your life matters.

We all are still sheltering in place, but I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

Why all the art honoring Dr. Fauci? Isn't he the guy who said the virus wouldn't come to the US? and that the President shouldn't shut down travel from China? and that even if it did come here, it wouldn't be much of a problem? and that there's no reason to wear a mask because they won't do any good?
Maybe we're just celebrating how "flexible" he is?
Note - yesterday was Wrong Way Corrigan Day. Maybe that's all this is - a bunch of accidental directions.

Keep Calm and Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.

17 July 2020 - Plague Journal Day 127

Micah 6:8
Romans 10:14-18
Yes, your life matters.

We all are still sheltering in place, but I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

The company where I work (well, technically I work at home these days), Universal McCann, has a long tradition of charity/outreach/community support/call it what you will, and even in these pandemic times that has not changed.
Yesterday was our annual Impact Day. In years past, it's been a day when our offices were closed and employees had the opportunity to join together in helping with some local community project. These projects included things like cleaning up abandoned fields, helping to build porches, tutoring at community centers, all that kind of thing.
This year we couldn't ask folks to come together to do a big project, so we were asked to find a project in our own locales - something that would help to make a Better World (that's the tagline for Impact Day). I decided to try my hand at doing some recordings for the blind.
I will admit, it was harder and more time-consuming than I had expected, but it was definitely rewarding. I think this is something I'll try to expand to an actual ministry over time, now that I'm starting to get the hang of it.

What would you do if you had a day off work to make the world better for someone else? (Asking for a friend.)

Keep Calm and Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.

16 July 2020 - Plague Journal Day 126

Micah 6:8
Psalm 96
Yes, your life matters.

We all are still sheltering in place, but I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

One of the writing projects I have going now is to write a poem for each book of the Bible. I'm not that far along, really, but I thought I'd share this one here:

Psalms

A book of hymns.
A book of prayers.
Why do we sing?
Why do we pray?
We sing for Joy – we sing from Joy.
We pray for Joy – we pray from despair.
We sing and pray to You, Lord, because
You are Great, You are Good.
You are Goodness and Power, You are God.
We sing and pray to You, Lord, because
We are small, afraid, sinful, and oppressed.
We are in need – we need You.
We pour out our Love and Need and Anguish
and we seek to be filled with Your
    Love and Power and Joy.
We pray – not to change You, to use a magic spell to get our way.
No.
We pray that You would change us,
that You would work Your Will in us,
that You would dwell in us,
to make us more like Jesus.

By the way, do you think it's just a coincidence that today is both World Snake Day and National Stress Awareness Day? It's just too appropriate to be accidental.

Keep Calm and Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.

15 July 2020 - Plague Journal Day 125

Micah 6:8
Exodus 20:12
Yes, your life matters.

We all are still sheltering in place, but I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

Today is my (late) Mom's birthday - she would have turned 86 today - and I miss her very much, every day.
One thing she did well, even though she didn't think she did, was to write. She wrote devotions for our annual church Lenten Devotions books for many years. The one that was always my favorite was one that she didn't think was worth submitting, but she felt she needed to turn in something, so there it was.
I'm sharing it here today for a couple reasons. First, because it really is my favorite of her devotions, and secondly because it seems incredibly appropriate in these days of fear and loathing.

Read and ponder:
A Lump of Coal

Read: Genesis 45:3-8, 50:18-20

Remember when you were a kid, and at Christmas time you hung up your stocking for Santa to fill?

If you'd been good, he'd give you candy and oranges.  If you'd been bad, you'd get coal.

Picture this –
A snowman facing the fireplace – his back to you.
He reaches into his stocking and finds coal.
He turns; he has eyes and shouts joyfully – “I can see!”

Sometimes we get coal.

Sometimes it's a blessing.

Prayer:  Dear God, let us see.  Amen

14 July 2020 - Plague Journal Day 124

Micah 6:8
Jeremiah 38:20-22
Yes, your life matters.

We all are still sheltering in place, but I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

Today is National Grand Marnier Day! Yes, we get to celebrate that lovely French liqueur today.
Perhaps this day was selected because today is Bastille Day. "Let's go, children of the fatherland, the day of glory has arrived!" (or words to that effect)
I've often wonder why the word fatherland - la patrie - is a feminine noun in French. Perhaps the French language anticipated today's hyper-sensitive, gender-focused mania and attempted to pre-surrender its integrity. As my flavour consultant might opine: "Cheese eating surrender monkeys."

Indeed.

Keep Calm and Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.

13 July 2020 - Plague Journal Day 123

Micah 6:8
Leviticus 1:1-9
Yes, your life matters.

We all are still sheltering in place, but I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

Do you remember when McDonald's french fries were even tastier than they are now?
Of course you do; but do you know why they were better back then?
It's because they were fried in beef tallow rather than the currently fashionable pseudo-grease masquerading as vegetable oil.

How fitting, then, that today is both National French Fry Day and National Beef Tallow Day.
If you don't want to fry potatoes in beef fat, you could always make some candles. I'll bet they add a certain umami note to the room when you burn them.
Sounds delicious, eh? Consider that a pseudo-carnage du jour if you like.

Keep Calm and Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.

12 July 2020 - Plague Journal Day 122

Micah 6:8

Yes, your life matters.

We all are still sheltering in place, but I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

Sorry this is after the fact, but feel free to watch the recorded version of our livestream from the GPUMC Memorial Garden this morning. Here's a link. Once again, we celebrated communion!

Speaking of church and communion, did you know that today is National Eat Your Jell-O Day?
What could be a better reminder of the days of potlucks than a nice bowl of Jell-O made in the correct color for the current liturgical season? (That's either Red if you're a traditional Methodist who keeps the Pentecost paraments up until August, or Green if you're more modern and switch away to ordinary time right after Pentecost. Make whichever you like. I won't judge you, but if you want to be correct it should be red.)

Keep Calm and Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.
