08 August 2020 - Plague Journal Day 148

Micah 6:8
Leviticus 23:9-10
Yes, your life matters.

We all are still sheltering in place, but I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

Today is National Zucchini Day. Generally thought of as an easy vegetable to grow - and thus to find over-abundant - zucchini is one of the most shared of all garden produce. In fact, today is also Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbour's Porch Day for that very reason. Of course, you could always donate it to your pastor if you want to be Biblical about it.

Zucchini works well on the grill, as part of a ratatouille, as the secret ingredient for zucchini bread, for stuffing, the list goes on and on, so there's no reason to be upset with a surfeit of zucchini - just roll with it and eat it in all the ways you can imagine.

Having trouble expanding that list of options? Well, today is also National Frozen Custard Day. Zucchini frozen custard, anyone?

Keep Calm and Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.

Micah 6:8

Yes, your life matters.

Today is International Beer Day, and it's also National Sea Serpent Day.
Clearly this is Gulden Drak's day!

OK, I know it's a dragon and not a sea serpent, but they're closely related species.

If you're not a big Gulden Drak fan (and what's wrong with you?), today is also Raspberries n Cream Day, so you could hoist a Framboise, or perhaps a Blackberry! (that's half Guiness, half Framboise)

Here's a video for your berrying pleasure.

Keep Calm and Stay Away.

06 August 2020 - Plague Journal Day 146

Micah 6:8
Genesis 37:9
Yes, your life matters.

One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

Today is National Root Beer Float Day. (I seem to remember that we called them Black Cows when I was a kid, but that may have been a Coke float (that's actual Coca-Cola to my Southern readers, not just any form of coke, soda, or (correctly) pop.), Can anyone confirm or correct me here? Thanks.)

As good as a root beer float is, I have to opine that a Boston Cooler is better. After all, what could be better than a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream floating in a tall glass of Vernor's Ginger Ale? Not much in a glass, anyway.
I have heard some opinions to the contrary recently, but my understanding is that the name of the Boston Cooler came from the Boston Edison neighborhood of Detroit, not from Beantown proper (as it were). It certainly makes more sense than any other explanation that I've heard. (I really find it hard to believe that it was named after Werner von Braun's liking for it after visiting Detroit and then returning to Cambridge, MA (which as far as Detroit is concerned is basically Boston). No matter how much he liked that gingery pop, I can't believe our float is named for his very temporary pseudo-hometowm.
See - even McDonald's knows what it is and how to make it!

So, hoist a root beer float to celebrate, and go the day one better with a Boston Cooler if you dare!
Enjoy!

Keep Calm and Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.

"What if just taking the animal out of the meat made us and our planet healthier? What if we all Go Beyond?" is the question from the first TV commercial from Beyond Meat.
The mind fairly boggles at the idea of a world without animals. The further question for those so intent on wiping out our less-able-to-defend-themselves brethren (and sistern) is - whence will come the CO2 needed for plant life? One wonders if these 'scientists' and 'activists' and 'chumps' ever encountered the idea of a balanced aquarium; a system where the plants and fish were in balance as regards O2 and CO2 (not to mention Nitrogen compounds of various types!). Perhaps that's too difficult to understand.
I know, I'm asking a lot; but if you're going to tell everyone how to run the world, you ought to have some concept of how things fit together and interdepend.
grr.

On a much happier note, today is International Traffic Light Day. Please obey the signals as you cross any national borders. I thank you in advance for your consideration.
Here's a bit of a celebratory video.
You're welcome.

Keep Calm and Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.

It's U.S. Coast Guard Day! Semper Paratus, my friends! What an amazing group of men and women, out there to protect, rescue, and defend us all. If only I had been taller, I might have considered joining, but Coast Guard regulations require coasties to be at least 6'2" tall in order to be able to wade out from the coast as needed. I was simply lacking in the vertical dimension.
Just seeing the rescues they've done on Deadliest Catch (as well as having seen rescues here on the Great Lakes) impresses me no end.

Keep Calm and Stay Away.

Gross! Who could have imagined we'd still be here a dozen dozen days with no end in sight? Certainly I did not. My last words leaving the office on 12 March 2020 were, "See you in a couple weeks, Tom." Apparently I'm not prescient.

Keep Calm and Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.

I'm preaching today, so why not stop by and see how I do? The scripture is about Jesus feeding 5.000 people, and Isaiah's message that God invites all who are hungry and thirsty to come to Him.
