Worship - 10 April 2022 - Music Sunday!

Micah 6:8
2 Corinthians 5:16-21
Yes, your life matters.

Some of you are still sheltering in place, but fear not: I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

For our 9:30 AM worship service we hae the choir back with a Music Sunday presentation of selection from the cantata "Footprints" by Joseph Martin (augmented with his "Winds through the Olive") and a couple of hymns for congregational singing.

The service went really well - the choir didn't just sing well (they did), but they led us in worship through the settings of the various stories leading down the path through Holy Week past the Crucifixion of Jesus to His glorious Resurrection on Easter and beyond to our own journeys with our Lord and Savior. I encourage you to check out the stream (info below).

Also, you're really late if you don't have a copy of our Lenten devotions book for 2022, but there were still a few on offer - of course you can always read them at https://gpumc.blogspot.com as well.

Remember, we streamed for all those who can't join us in person, and we intend to continue streaming indefinitely. Still, know that we miss seeing you in person - please come join in corporate prayer, praise, and worship as soon as you feel ready.

As usual, today's stream should just appear as the latest entry on our YouTube channel, here.
You'll find all our previous worship videos right there at that same place, and today's stream will stay there as a recording as well.

See Face to Face - 24 March 2022 - Plague Journal Day 742

Micah 6:8
1 Corinthians 13:12   Hebrews 10:24-25
Yes, your life matters.

Some of you are still sheltering in place, but fear not: I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

Here's an interesting bit of TV history. On 24 March 1932, the first religious service was telecast in the US. Ninety years ago, watching worship on a screen in one's home was a new and nearly miraculous thing. Today, it's nearly supplanted actual attendance at worship services in many churches.

I was at a church meeting last night - not via Teams or Zoom, but in person at last! - and this was a topic of conversation. Not because it was on the agenda, but rather because it impinges on so many other things we would want and hope to do as a congregation.
It hardly makes sense to add more worship service times and formats when we currently have a nearly empty sanctuary. Perhaps changing everything, but just adding doesn't seem like a good idea. The other aspect is how hard it is to make connections that would normally be made on Sunday mornings, and those are what lead to involvement in other parts of the church life.

Sunday Schools, Mission Trips, a vast array of outreach and nurturing ministries are being choked off due to lack of awareness - both of their potential existence and of the folks one would meet when coming together for them. It's sad, really. If you're not going in person, you're really missing out.

I know how easy it is to roll out of bed that much later, not have to get the kids ready (or even just get dressed oneself), turn on the computer or smart TV or tablet or phone and "worship" on YouTube. I know because we all had to do that for a while.
But ... as soon as I could be involved in getting those services out I jumped at the chance. Even if there were only four or five of us in the sanctuary or chapel, we were together and the worship was much more real. And it wasn't terribly long before we managed to worship outside around our lovely Memorial Garden. Sure, we were masked in our lawn chairs, but we were together, and the worship was that much more real.
Once we got back to the sanctuary things were even better - except we still have so many of the church family who have gotten out of the habit of meeting together, something that must not be neglected.

Of course, this is pandemic habits riding on the coattails of a larger trend of people's neglecting worship, while still asserting their "spiritual" cred, whatever that might mean. If it doesn't change your behavior, it's probably not real or not important to you. That's a general rule for looking at my own life - if I say something's important, but I don't act like it, if it's not bearing fruit in my life, then I'm only trying to fool you or myself.

Come back to church folks.
This came to mind, but isn't really all that tightly related.

Keep Calm and Don't Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.

Burn, Baby, Burn! - 02 February 2022 - Plague Journal Day 692

Micah 6:8
Malachi 3:1-4
Yes, your life matters.

Some of you are still sheltering in place, but fear not: I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

Good grief, the toll-free and wireless calls are coming in non-stop these days. That's all the information my caller ID can provide, but they all seem to be political in nature, whether actually fundraising or pretending to do a survey, then asking for money.

At any rate, it's a darned good thing we have our emergency goat from Archie McPhee! When the phone rings, I look at the caller ID and get slightly upset, or even mildly perturbed; but once I answer and share the dulcet tones of my screaming herd of goats with the caller I can - and do! - hang up with a smile on my face.

Today's freewrite word is spark.

I didn't go to church camp as a kid. I did go spend a week at my cousin's house in Indiana, so from my parents' perspective it was basically the same thing, only cheaper. I bring this up because this means I don't know - from experience - all those camp things like cooking in a tuna can over a candle, or telling ghost stories around the campfire with a flashlight shining up my nose, or all those camp songs. I only know them by osmosis.
We (the Moving Vans, that is) were asked to sing and provide the music for an outdoor worship service at Jefferson Avenue United Methodist Church one Summer Sunday. Well, the weather decided that the outdoor service ought to be in the church basement rather than at the park (or at least the powers that were decided that being dry was more likely to encourage worship than was sitting in a driving rain. I tend to agree with that assessment).
At any rate, it was there that I got my first exposure to the hymn "It Only Takes a Spark" as sung by campers. It was far more raucous - and engaging - than the way I would have pulled it out of the hymnal. It really did only take a spark, and the warmth of that day's worship remains in my memory to this day.

Keep Calm and Don't Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.

By the way, today is also Boxing Day. It's not a big thing in these United States, but maybe it should be. It started as a time of boxing up our excess clothing and so forth - after all, many of us just got a bunch of new stuff yesterday - and donating it to the needy. Boxing up our excess and sharing it. What a great idea. Maybe we should have a Rummage Sale the day after Christmas!
No, never mind - I don't want the UMW after me!

Christmas Eve! - 24 December 2021 - Plague Journal Day 652

Micah 6:8
Luke 2:1-7
Yes, your life matters.

Some of you are still sheltering in place, but fear not: I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

This is Christmas Eve - the day before we celebrate the birth of Christ. Many start the celebration this evening with church services, family gatherings, even present openings. (How do they do that? Does Santa some early to some folks, just so they can do that? It just doesn't make any sense!)

In a literal sense, we'll start this evening with worship at church, then head home to finish all those last-minute things that somehow never get done until that last minute.
Still, in at least as real a sense, we started this celebration on 28 November - the first Sunday of Advent - as we started the journey of preparation for the Joy we celebrate on Christmas.
Further, in at last as real a sense as either of those, we've been celebrating for as long as we've been Christians. Just as Ebenezer Scrooge discovers, it's imperative to keep Christmas in our hearts every day of every year.

I had a conversation with a friend at church recently about C&E Christians - those who only show up on Christmas and Easter. He said that growing up he had been pretty much one of those, but no longer. My thought is that if we made worship more like those two all year we might get more Christians who realize that Christmas and Easter are just particular days to emphasize what we really do and believe all year (and all week!) long.

So celebrate Christ's birth today and tomorrow... and every day... and celebrate His death and resurrection every day as well.
After all, Love came down at Christmas, lived with us for a few decades, then died for us and rose for us.
Amen!

Keep Calm and Don't Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.

Music Sunday Worship - 12 December 2021 - Plague Journal Day 640

Music Sunday!
Twice each year the music department takes over a worship service at Grosse Pointe United Methodist Church, and today is one of those two Sundays. We'll have choral anthems, handbells, solos on piano and keyboard, and congregational hymns, each introduced with a brief reading from the songs or related Scripture passages - almost a Lessons and Carols service.

At any rate, God will be worshiped and glorified, and good fellowship will be shared all morning.
Why not join us?

Remember, we'll be streaming for all those who can't join us in person, and intend to continue that practice indefinitely.

Keep Calm and Don't Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.
The mental health issues related to our lockdown and the pandemic are especially hard for people with depression. NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, has a 24 hour helpline: 800-950-6264
