What About NaNoWriMo? - 19 November 2021 - Plague Journal Day 617

Micah 6:8
John 21:25
Yes, your life matters.

Some of you are still sheltering in place, but fear not: I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

NaNoWriMo - what about it indeed? (that's National Novel Writing Month, aka November)
In years passed I have probably bored many folks with my constant updates, either celebrating the number of words I'd written or bemoaning the fact that I had hardly written any.

Sadly, I've been stuck on the same novel project for a few years now - it seems like a great story to me, and much of it is written and/or outlined, but actually finishing a draft has eluded me thus far.

Well, I came across a book title the other day that may have been just what I needed to spur me on to writing again. I have no idea what the book is about, but the title spoke to me of a book I could actually enjoy writing while I wait for the other one to finally congeal in my mind.
It's much more of a kind with my first novel, Bytes Akimbo - a not-quite-absurdist humorous sci-fi romp. This should be fun for me to write and for me to read as I proof and revise.
(Here's a link to that first novel if you're interested - it's actually part of Kindle Unlimited for those of you who have that service.)

I think I'm going to jump on this one as soon as I'm done outlining the sermon I have to prepare for next Sunday. Stay tuned.

Keep Calm and Don't Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.

Starving Artists? - 09 March 2021 - Plague Journal Day 362

Today is Unique Names Day, a day that is perfect for a little more of my shameless self-promotion. If you were to peruse a character list from my first novel, Bytes Akimbo - Cybersleuth, you would find a veritable plethora of unique names. From Boden Bdrndrn to Malcolm X Forbes with a raft of others in between. I highly recommend this book for a few reasons. First, I know its author quite well, and I think pretty highly of him. Second, it still makes me laugh when I read it, lo these many years later. Third, I could use the royalty checks. Why not check it out? It's available in both printed and Kindle versions. (By the way, I work hard to avoid ever saying something is "more unique" or "very unique" as those are nearly meaningless. Either something is unique or it's not. Another pet peeve revealed.)

I had no idea there was such a day (granted, there is a day for pretty much anything imaginable), but today is Uncommon Instrument Awareness Day. You might want to pull out your Mbira or Kalimba, your Ocarina or Sweet Potato, your Nose Flute or Hano, or any number of other "unusual" instruments (please, just none of the usual suspects!) and play a tune for your co-quarantinians to celebrate.

Allow me to do my part in exposing unusual instruments to the broader public. Here is an excerpt from that fabulous novel, Bytes Akimbo - Cybersleuth, describing an uncommon instrument: the Mahi-Mahi piob ullinagh.

After the grass-skirted steward had cleared the table, the discussion ambled along at an untoward pace, careening dizzyingly across table tops, to and fro, lickety split.
“Boden,” enquired Pete, “why is it that the men here on Mahi-Mahi wear grass skirts, while the women wear normal clothing?” The general undercurrent of murmurs and vituperation lent gravity to Pete’s query, as well as suggesting that his curiosity was not unshared.
“Haven’t you noticed the name tags on the various stewards, bus boys, and such?” replied Boden.
“If you’ll check, you’ll find that we’re being served by fellows with names like MacOttar, MacInnes, Carmichael, and Kirkcudbright. This island was settled by a group of wayward Scots who dropped their tartans and took up the grass kilt. Perhaps when we have a moment, I’ll have one of the local musicians give a demonstration of the Mahi-Mahi piob ullinagh.”
    “You don’t mean … “ began Pete.
“Surely not … “ continued Karl.
    “Oh, I can’t believe … “ pursued Bonnie.
    “What’s that?” expostulated Polly.
“It’s a native instrument, made from local ingredients. Quite ingenious, actually. They take the tanned, preserved body of a Portuguese Man-O-War, and attach several hollowed out, polished conch shells to it at various protuberances. The Man-O-War sack is inflated by blowing into it, and the air is forced out through the conch shells, much to the delight and amusement of any audience lucky enough to encounter one of the masters of such an instrument.”
“An instrument of torture is what it sounds like to me,” berated Steve.
“Oh, you’ve heard one before, have you?”
Steve looked askance at Boden. Boden looked the skance right back at him until Steve backed down. “Irv, make him stop looking at me!” quailed a quaking Steve, “he won’t stop looking at me!”

Lunch and frivolity generally having improved the morale and posture of the group, coffee was soon served and savored. Discussion of the upcoming launch of the radioactive dolphin-unsafe cans of tuna soon won out over the question of whether they all had really to listen to the concert which Boden had surreptitiously scheduled for them that very evening.

“OK, so after the launch, we’ll decide about the concert. Please, folks, let’s discuss the fate of the world rather than the merits of blowing air into a dead Portuguese Man-O-War, can’t we?”

And, for your further reading pleasure, here is a link to buy the book.

As if that weren't enough (and I can't imagine that it was), today is also World Ranger Day!
Almost certainly the best way to celebrate outside a State or National Park would be to enjoy the Riders in the Sky, featuring Ranger Doug, the Idol of American Youth. It might not be the easy way, but it would be the cowboy way.

Keep Calm and Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.

07 May 2020 - Plague Journal Day 56

We all are still sheltering in place, but I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

Welcome to Thursday, one of my two favorite days of each week.

I'm not sure I could have imagined a less appropriate celebration in these times of quarantine and craziness than today's National Day of Reason. We're told we need to be in the grip of unreasoning fear at all times, lest we die of Schrödinger's Virus. (Act as if you have it to protect everyone else, act as if you don't have it to protect yourself - we all have it and don't have it, so we're all dead and we're all alive. You're welcome.

Now, how about a full-on shameless self-promotion of my books? That seems like a great idea. (At least it does to me.) After all, today is Make A Book Day, and, furthermore, I have made a book - actually more than one!

You may be looking for reading materials during your in-place sheltering, and have I got some suggestions for you!
  • For some light, science-fiction-y humor I can heartily recommend Bytes Akimbo - Cybersleuth: Being a Zany, Madcap Romp from Here to There, and Beyond!
This is a rollicking romp around the world and out of it! Join our intrepid heroes as they attempt to save the world from a threatened invasion. Perhaps the finest book ever written on this theme using these characters - yes, quite likely the finest. It's available in both paperback and Kindle editions.
  • For some spiritual alternate history reading (but still set in the present), I also heartily recommend A Rune With A View. This is the best Grail quest I've ever written.

Jerry Lombard enjoys his life in the Michigan resort town of Charleroi: singing in his church choir, cooking gourmet meals, and selling unusual items at Lombard's Miscellanery.
That quiet life changes when Charleroi is invaded by Vikings … or rather by biker Viking wannabes intent on enjoying the Summer season on the shores of Lake Michigan.
Jerry finds a new friend among all those new folks in town, and once he’s met Karl, he begins finding other things – notes, poems, books – and having and remembering dreams that feel more real than life. It's available in both paperback and Kindle editions.
  •  For some US Civil War adventure reading, let me urge you to consider An Adventure with Guerrillas, by Ethelbirt Crouse (my great-great-grandfather)

This little book is a memoir of an encounter with Confederate Guerrillas during the Civil War. The author was captured by a band of Confederate Guerrillas, and taken to be executed along with 12 other Union soldiers. He actually survived two execution attempts, escaping with the only other survivor. This is the story of their journey from behind enemy lines - exciting, insightful, and sobering all at once. Really, a must-read for any student of history, war, the United States, and mankind. It's available in both paperback and Kindle editions.
  • Finally (for now) for some actual Bible study, how about The 3:16 Journal - Exploring Sixty-Six Books of the Bible
This is a Bible Study based on examining all the 3:16 passages in the Bible, book by book. A set of questions is posed for each passage to lead the Bible student through the scriptures by looking at verse 3:16 (or the nearest verses to it) in each of the 66 books of the Bible. It's only available in paperback.
That's all for now, but you can always check my stuff on Amazon at my Amazon Author Page.

Kindle-age du Jour - 24 January 2015

Well, imagine, if you will, my surprise to find that I had neglected to create Kindle versions of two of the books I've published. Perhaps there was even a bit of disappointment mixed into that surprise.

Happily, I've now remedied that situation, and there are Kindle versions of both Bytes Akimbo - Cybersleuth and An Adventure with Guerrillas available for purchase at Amazon (they're also included in the free borrowing program through Amazon Prime).

Please feel free to take a look at them - and perhaps even to purchase one or both. I won't mind at all.

Enjoy!

Summer is nearly upon us

That means it's nearly Summer reading time, so why not take a quick tour of my Amazon page?

Charlie van Becelaere's Amazon Author Page

There are delightful books there for your consideration, and who knows? perhaps you'll do a bit more shopping on Amazon once you're there. I know it's a terrible temptation for me.
