17 May 2021 - Plague Journal Day 431

Micah 6:8
2 Corinthians 9:6-9
Yes, your life matters.

We all are still sheltering in place, but I'm here to keep you sane and entertained.
One could hardly ask for much more than that, now could one?

Today we celebrate April 15th! Or rather, today is the deadline for filing and paying Income Tax in these United States. One supposes that calling it Tax Day makes more sense, just as we should call it Independence Day rather than the Fourth of July. "Do they have April 15th in England?" It seems very likely, just as they also have the Fourth of July. After all, it's not reasonable to go straight from the 14th to the 16th, and why double one when there's a perfectly appropriate date right there between, waiting to be used?

This reminds me of one of the trips we took to England - it was a Methodist Heritage Tour for a group of our High School students. We took them to a carvery in London for dinner - to experience fine English cuisine, as it were - and as we went through the line where one of the options was turkey, one of our girls asked the cute carver at the turkey station whether they "have turkey for Thanksgiving?" He kindly explained to her that Thanksgiving is an American (including Canada!) holiday, and that turkey was more likely a Christmas dish there when it wasn't found at the carvery. (By the way, this was at the Albert in Victoria Street. We've been several times and would happily return should the opportunity arise.)

At any rate (pun intended!), here's hoping all our tax returns are happy ones (and filed on time)! Too bad the government isn't anything like the Lord as described in the second reference at the top of this post!

Keep Calm and Stay Away.
I'll be back tomorrow.

Turkey? - 28 November 2020 - Plague Journal Day 261

Today is Turkey Leftover Day. We are abstaining from this celebration, however. You see, we are planning a second Thanksgiving in a week or so, and we're trying to space out our turkey consumption so it's not too concentrated in any one time frame. Instead we took a pork shoulder and dropped it with a bunch of good stuff (beer, vinegar, mustard, hot sauce, etc.) into the Instant Pot and had a wonderful bowl of pulled pork on mashed potatoes with corn. (Those last two were leftovers, so we were sort of in the spirit of the day, I suppose.)

It was delicious, and we'll enjoy some turkey tomorrow.

Colossians 4:5-6

Today is Black Cow Root Beer Float Day. One has to wonder why this particular treat gets celebrated so frequently. After all, earlier this month we had plain old Root Beer Float Day at which time I wondered whether that mightn't also called a Black Cow, and opined that it could. As it turns out, I was right (see post of August 6).

It further eventuates that today is National Potato Day - what is your favorite potato dish? With this confluence of commemorations it might be fun to make a gravy float - a glass of gravy with a scoop of mashed potatoes in it, much in the manner of a Black Cow / Boston Cooler.
I think that sounds lovely, and it reminds me of a cocktail challenge of a few years ago, when my sister challenged me to come up with a gravy-based cocktail, eventuating in the invention of the Gravy Alexander. It was very like a Brandy Alexander, but seasoned with spices normally associated with a roasted turkey and its gravy. (Hmm, maybe gravy is the mother of invention, eh, Frank? I suppose we could ask a vegetable.)
